Adding Razorpay Payments and GST Invoicing to Your Software

22 October 2026 · 4 min read

Adding online payments and GST invoicing to your software means customers can pay through a link, checkout or subscription inside your system, the payment is confirmed automatically, a correct GST invoice is generated and sent, and the transaction flows into your accounts. With a gateway such as Razorpay and a well-designed integration, the whole chain from demand to reconciled receipt runs without manual steps.

Many growing businesses still send bank details on WhatsApp, wait for a screenshot, check the bank statement, raise an invoice in Tally and email it. Every step is a delay and a chance of error.

The building blocks

Payment collection

  • Payment links sent by WhatsApp, SMS or email for a specific amount.
  • Checkout embedded in your website, portal or app.
  • Subscriptions for recurring fees.
  • UPI, cards, net banking and wallets, all through one gateway.

Confirmation by webhook

The gateway notifies your server when a payment succeeds or fails. Your system should rely on this server-to-server confirmation, not on the customer returning to a success page, which can fail if they close the browser.

Invoicing

On confirmed payment, or on dispatch or delivery depending on your process, the system generates an invoice with the correct GSTIN, place of supply, HSN or SAC codes, tax split between CGST and SGST or IGST, and sequential numbering.

E-invoicing where applicable

Businesses above the notified turnover threshold must generate e-invoices through the government portal, receiving an IRN and QR code. Integration can handle this automatically through a GST service provider.

Accounts sync

Receipts and invoices sync to Tally or your accounting system. See Tally integration.

Reconciliation

Gateway settlements arrive in your bank in batches, net of fees. Matching settlements to individual payments, and recording gateway fees and the GST on them, is where many businesses lose track.

Where businesses go wrong

| Mistake | Consequence | | --- | --- | | Trusting the browser redirect | Paid orders missed, or unpaid orders marked paid | | No idempotency | Duplicate records when webhooks retry | | Invoice numbering outside the system | Gaps and duplicates in the sequence | | Wrong place of supply | Incorrect tax type charged | | Ignoring refunds and partial payments | Books that never reconcile | | Storing card data | Security and compliance risk; let the gateway handle it |

Security

  • Never store card numbers; the gateway handles sensitive payment data.
  • Verify webhook signatures so fake notifications are rejected.
  • Keep API keys on the server only.
  • Log every payment event for audit.

GST details to get right

  • Customer GSTIN validation for B2B invoices.
  • Place of supply determining intra-state or inter-state tax.
  • Correct rates by product or service code.
  • Credit notes for refunds and adjustments.

Have your chartered accountant review invoice formats and tax logic before launch.

A phased plan

  1. Payment links for existing invoices, confirmed by webhook, receipts synced to accounts.
  2. Automatic invoicing from your system on payment or dispatch.
  3. Checkout in your portal or app. See building a client portal.
  4. Settlement reconciliation and reporting.

Frequently asked questions

Can customers pay by UPI?

Yes. UPI is typically the most popular method for Indian customers and is supported by major gateways.

Do we need e-invoicing?

It depends on your turnover; check the current threshold with your accountant. If required, it can be automated.

How long does integration take?

Payment links with webhook confirmation and accounts sync typically take three to six weeks. Full checkout and reconciliation take longer.

What about international payments?

Gateways support international cards and currencies with additional compliance requirements, such as purpose codes and export documentation. Plan for these early if you sell abroad.
