Mobile App Security for Business Apps

18 October 2026 · 4 min read

Securing a business mobile app comes down to a few essentials: strong authentication, protecting data stored on the phone, securing the APIs the app talks to, handling lost devices and departing staff, keeping everything updated, and testing before release. Most real-world breaches of business apps come from weak back-end APIs and poor account management, not from sophisticated attacks on the phone itself.

The main risks

  • Weak authentication: shared logins, simple passwords, sessions that never expire.
  • Data left on devices: customer lists, prices or documents stored unencrypted.
  • Insecure APIs: the server trusts whatever the app sends, or returns more data than needed.
  • Hard-coded secrets: API keys embedded in the app that anyone can extract.
  • Lost or stolen phones with the app still logged in.
  • Former employees who still have access.
  • Outdated libraries with known vulnerabilities.

Essentials for every business app

Authentication

  • Individual accounts, never shared logins.
  • One-time passwords or single sign-on with your company identity provider.
  • Biometric unlock for convenience, backed by proper authentication.
  • Sessions that expire, and the ability to log out a user remotely.

Data on the device

  • Store only what the user needs, for as long as needed.
  • Use the platform's secure storage for tokens and sensitive data.
  • Encrypt local databases.
  • Clear data on logout.

APIs and the back end

  • Every request authenticated and authorised on the server, based on the user's role.
  • Return only the fields the screen needs.
  • Validate all input on the server, never trust the app.
  • Rate limiting to prevent abuse.
  • All traffic over HTTPS, with certificate validation.

Secrets

  • No private API keys in the app. Calls to third-party services that need secrets go through your server.
  • Keys stored in secure server configuration and rotated if exposed.

Devices and people

  • Remote logout and data wipe for lost devices.
  • Immediate access removal when staff leave, ideally linked to HR offboarding.
  • For company-owned phones, mobile device management.

Updates

  • Keep libraries and frameworks current.
  • Release security fixes quickly; a regular release rhythm makes this routine. See mobile app maintenance.

Testing

  • Code review focused on authentication, storage and API calls.
  • Automated dependency scanning for known vulnerabilities.
  • API testing: can one user access another user's records by changing an ID? This is one of the most common flaws.
  • Penetration testing for apps handling payments, health or financial data, before launch and after major changes.

Compliance

Apps that process personal data must follow the Digital Personal Data Protection Act: clear notice and consent, collecting only what is needed, securing it, and honouring deletion requests. App stores also require accurate privacy declarations. See app store approval.

Security checklist before launch

  • [ ] Individual accounts with strong authentication
  • [ ] Sessions expire; remote logout available
  • [ ] Sensitive local data encrypted and minimised
  • [ ] No secrets in the app bundle
  • [ ] Server-side authorisation on every API endpoint
  • [ ] Tested that users cannot access others' records
  • [ ] Dependencies scanned and updated
  • [ ] Offboarding removes access immediately
  • [ ] Privacy declarations accurate

Frequently asked questions

Are cross-platform apps less secure than native ones?

No. Security depends on design and implementation, not the framework.

Do we need a penetration test?

For apps handling payments, health data or large volumes of personal data, yes. For simpler internal apps, a focused security review is often enough.

What if a phone with the app is stolen?

With remote logout and encrypted storage, the risk is low. Without them, treat it as a potential data breach.

Who is responsible for security, us or the developer?

Both. The developer builds securely; you manage access, offboarding and updates. Put responsibilities in the contract.
